Golden monsters are legendary, rare, and powerful versions of normal creatures. A golden monster is most easily distinguished from its kin by its bright yellow coloration. More subtle but more important is the huge increase in resilience and physical might held by such a legendary monster. Some golden monsters even move with incredible haste, as if accelerating through time faster than any normal creature would. In practically every case, a golden monster is the pinnacle of its kind, both envied and revered.
     It is unknown what exactly causes a monster to become golden, but the power seems to be of divine origin. Some suggest a monster becomes golden through the miraculous blessing of a sage. Others say a silver monster will become golden if it is struck by lightning from the heavens. Perhaps only golden monsters themselves know for sure.

Creature modification

The statblock for a golden monster can be created from any base creature, though it seems less likely to happen with constructs or undead, and more likely to happen to monsters that are already silver. For such a creature, use the following changes as a guideline.

Type. If the creature's base type is beast, it becomes a monstrosity instead.

Ability scores. The monster's Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores all increase by 6, to a maximum of 30. If after this increase these scores are not at least 18, they become 18.

Heart Containers. The monster gains at least six more Heart Containers. If after this increase the monster doesn't have at least 90 heart points (including its new Constitution modifier), add more until it does.

Speed. The monster's speed(s) increase by 10 feet.

Saves. The monster gains proficiency in one additional saving throw, usually Dexterity or Constitution.

Immunities. A golden monster cannot be charmed, frightened, or paralyzed.

Resistances. A golden monster gains resistance to radiant and lightning damage.

Multiattack. A monster's multiattack gains one more attack. If the creature doesn't already have a multiattack or equivalent, it gains one and can make two or three attacks with it.

Extra Traits

The monster gains the following traits. If the creature already has Legendary Resistance, it can use the trait an extra time per day. If the creature already has the Brute trait or a similar one, then Powerful Attacks replaces it.

Improved Initiative. The golden monster has advantage on initiative rolls. If the campaign uses static initiative, it instead gains a +5 bonus to its initiative score.

Legendary Resistance (1/Day). If the golden monster fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Powerful Attacks. A weapon attack deals one extra die of its damage when the golden monster hits with it (included in the attack), and these weapon attacks are magical.

Legendary Actions

The monster gains legendary actions, usually including some of the options below, or other options if appropriate. If it already has legendary actions, the number of legendary actions it can make each round may increase, or more costly actions may require fewer actions.

Detect. The golden monster makes a Wisdom (Perception) check.

Withdraw. The golden monster moves up to half its speed or rises from being prone. During this movement it cannot be targeted with attacks made as reactions

Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The golden monster moves up to half its speed and makes a melee weapon attack (or other attack as appropriate to the base creature).

Resist (Costs 3 Actions). If the creature is subject to an effect that would require it to use an action to end the effect, or require an action to make a saving throw, it takes that action.
