Blade Deflection. Volvagia is immune to piercing and slashing damage from attacks while it has cover, or if the attack roll had disadvantage.

Illumination. Volvagia sheds bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet.

Magma Swim. Volvagia can swim through molten rock as if it was water.

Actions (2 per turn)

Fire Breath (Recharge 5-6). Volvagia exales fire in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in this area must make a DC Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save a creature takes 33 (6d10) fire damage and is ignited. On a failed save a creature takes half as much damage and isn't ignited.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 25 (4d10 + 3) slashing damage. Critical Hit: If the target is a Large or smaller creature, it is also pushed 5 feet away.

Burning Mane. Melee Spell Attack: +7, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d10) fire damage and the target is ignited (unless it has resistance to fire damage).

Reactions

Opportunity Attack. When a creature moves out of Volvagia's 5-foot reach, it can make one claw attack targeting that creature.

Boss Mode

While the volvagia has a Challenge rating higher than any other monster in combat, its heart points are doubled, and it has advantage on initiative checks. It can also take 3 boss reactions each round, replacing its normal 1 reaction per round. The boss volvagia can use a boss reaction to Escape, Maneuver, Search, use any of its normal reactions, or do any of the following:

Boss Resistance (3/Day). When the Volvagia would fail a saving throw, it can choose to lose 30 heart points and succeed on the save instead.

Cleave (Costs 2 Reactions). Immediately after the Volvagia hits a creature with a melee attack, it can move a distance up to half its speed and make another melee attack against a different target.

Volvagia is massive, crimson serpent that swims through air and lava alike as if by magic. Its razor-sharp claws, flaming mane, and skull-like faceplate can can crush and tear through solid rock. This dragon may have once had spiritual significance, but such has been lost or corrupted beyond recognition.
Scourge of Death Mountain. Volvagia's favored prey include the stone-hard, seemingly ingestible gorons. This ferocious dragon is one of extremely few monsters that even proud goron warriors are right to fear.
Legendary Monster. This magical monstrosity is so rare it is not known if more than one exists. Wherever it dwells, there is little doubt Volvagia is the apex predator in whatever cave or volcano is unfortunate enough to sustain it.

Volvagia's Lair

Volvagia's lair is in the seat of a volcano. It is a wide circle of solid rock is surrounded on all sides by lava, and may have small 5-foot wide pits of lava sprinkled throughout. Volvagia routinely flies from one pit of lava to another, using it as cover and potentially dragging any pursuers to their death. According to the *Dungeon Master's Guide*, wading in lava deals 55 (10d10) fire damage at the start of a creature's turn. It may be impossible for adventurers to survive in such a hot environment without resistance to fire damage.
When fighting inside its lair, Volvagia can invoke the ambient magic to take lair actions. On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Volvagia uses either of the following lair actions if it isn't submerged in lava:
Heat Flare. Intense heat radiates out from Volvagia. Each creature within a 120-foot radius of it takes 5 (1d10) fire damage and must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or become ignited.
Rockslide. Flaming rocks fall from the walls or ceilings. Each creature in the lair must succeed on a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw or take 3 (1d6) bludgeoning damage and fall prone.
     Environment: Volcanic
