See creature overview for a general explanation of creatures, creature stat blocks, and how they work.
The Monster Manual lists creatures at a given Challenge (CR); that's it, that's the CR this creature has. This bestiary takes a more dynamic approach. Each creature page is in one of five groups: minor, standard, boss, epic boss, or special:
- A minor creature has one to four different stat blocks on its page, each representing a different CR of 2 or less. Non-combatants and animals are minor creatures. Most minor creatures would prefer to avoid a fight.
- A standard creature has nine or more different stat blocks on its page, usually including CRs 1 through 9. These creatures will usually fight in groups.
- A legendary creature has five or more different stat blocks on its page (usually in increments of five, such as CR 5, 10, 15, 20, & 25) and usually has legendary actions.
- An epic creature has four or more different stat blocks (usually CR 14, 22, 30, & 40) and might serve as the final antagonist of a campaign or a high-level adventure.
- A special creature does not fit into any of the previous categories, and may only feature one stat block.
Some creatures may be in two groups. Lynels for example have both standard and legendary stat blocks.
