The cloud barrier is an layer of the Light World's atmosphere that is invisible to those outside of it. Those below the barrier see the sky, stars, moon, and more—but not the many sky-lands and other phenomnenon hidden in the cloud barrier itself. Likewise, those inside cloud barrier often cannot see the ground, but instead only an endless sea of clouds.

The highest mountains in the Light World might pierce into the barrier. Creatures are perfectly capable of traveling into and from the barrier if they can fly high enough. Some beasts, like loftwings, have an instinctive fear of leaving the barrier.

The invisibility of this layer was created millenia ago by the goddess Hylia to protect Skyloftians—who lived in the cloud barrier—from Demise the monster-infested world below. Though its purpose has waned, the barrier still persists long after the end of Demise.

The world of the cloud barrier is exceptionally sparse compared to the world below. Notable locations above the cloud barrier include Skyloft, City in the Sky, and other sky islands. Members of the wind tribe live on top of the barrier itself as if it was solid, in a region they call the "Cloud Tops."
