A deflecting shield has an unusual design, for shields. It provides exceptional protection against ranged attacks, but is useless in melee combat. While most warriors favor a different type of shield, fighters who fight from afar with archery or magical beams may prefer this shield.
While wielding a deflecting shield, your AC increases by 3 against ranged attacks. Your AC is not increased against melee attacks or for any other purpose. If you wield a deflecting shield alongside other shields, only the one with the greatest benefit to your AC applies.
Proficiency. If you are not proficient with a shield while wielding one, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.
