Gemstones are so valuable that collectors, nobility, and the otherwise rich sometimes use them as currency in lieu of rupees. Unlike most gear adventurers come across, gemstones retain their full value when bought or sold. Monsters—especially silver and golden monsters—evaporate into valuable gemstones when they are slain, so adventurers and mercenaries often supply and use them as well.
Aside from being used as currency, gemstones have inherent magical power. Like spoils, they supply their full value when used as materials in crafting. Some spells even use gemstones as a material component, and some spells specify diamonds in particular. The adjacent table lists the most renowned types of gems in Hyrule, but there could certainly be more beyond these.
