Tokay are a race of Medium humanoids that primarily dwell on tropical islands, where they are rarely if ever influenced by outsiders. Living simple lives, most tokay are unfamiliar with topics known throughout the entire Light World. Though they practice fishing and basic craftsmanship, even something as simple as smiting or mining are exotic concepts among them. Nonetheless they are a content and athletic people who often pass the time with pranks, games, and puzzles.
Reptilian Island-folk
An average adult tokay stands between 5'6" and 6'. Its body is entirely covered in sleek scales of a solid hue. These scales are most often green, but can also be of other colors including orange, red, or blue. The scales are tough enough to act as a form of natural armor and are known to repel corrosive acids. A tokay's belly and the front of its neck are softer to the touch, and of a lighter color than the rest of its scaled body.
Any given tokay has clawed limbs, a short tail that helps it balance, hard ridges that trail from its tail to the back of its long neck, a slight pot belly, a wide fanged mouth, and wide-set circular eyes. These omnivorous people are remarkably well-adapted to their habitats of jungles and beaches and can maneuver through water or up trees with an ease that perplexes most other races. They seldom wear clothes and usually find other races' garments uncomfortable.
There are minimal differences between male and female tokay, but the race reproduces sexually. Offspring are produced in batches of several eggs, but usually, only a minority of these eggs survive to adulthood.
Isolated But Carefree
Tokay society is loose and isolated. They traditionally live in small jungle islands deep in the ocean, completely separate from the rest of the world and often from other groups of tokay. Most tokay are unaware there even is a world beyond the scope of their dainty islands. Only a minority of tribes are able to speak a limited and heavily accented form of Hylian, usually as a result of contact with explorers from other races.
They are often apex predators in their habitats, and rarely have to worry about threats other than disease. Their lifestyle is laid back, and their villages only have the loosest of structure—often they don't even have a real concept of "owning" objects as opposed to just sharing them among their tribe. Indeed, they may be among the few intelligent creatures in all the Light World who don't respect the value of rupees.
Most tokay tribes enjoy particularly athletic sports and pastimes. Many groups are known to hunt and fish for enjoyment as much as for nourishment.
Although there is much a tokay might not understand, one is generally open-minded and accepting of new ideas. Almost any tokay is naturally curious, brave, and adventurous. The relatively few tokay who escape their isolated islands and jungles adapt readily to the life of explorers and adventurers.
Despite sharing some physical resemblance to the infamous lizal, another race of reptilian humanoids, tokay are comparatively pacifist. Coincidentally, the two races see only a passing resemblance in each other.
Character details
Alignment. Tokay live in a society without complex laws, economy, or structure. They enjoy lives filled with relative independence. Most tokay tend towards strongly towards chaos.
Age. A tokay reaches adulthood in its early teens. One rarely lives beyond the age of 60.
Diet. As a Medium humanoid, each day you require at least 1 pound of food and 1 gallon of water to avoid exhaustion. Tokay are particularly fond of fish and fruit.
Names. Tokay who have only lived among their own kind in small tribes usually don't have names—or at least not how most other races would imagine names. Makeshift titles are more commonly used to distinguish a tokay among others in its village. A tokay that intermingles with other races may instead adopt a name for itself based on the naming conventions of the race or races that most influence it. Examples include Blue, Fang, Fire-Scale, Fish, Hunter, Mauve, Mountain, Redson, Scar, Sharp, Shorty, Squat, Swift, Tall-Tokay, and Water-Scale.
