Partial armor consists of any damaged or incomplete armor that is too ineffective to be considered a better type of armor, such as an armored tunic or hide armor. Partial armor could represent anything from wearing nothing but a helmet, to wearing a heavily damaged suit of plate, among many other possibilities. Such armor is common among monsters. Partial armor is usually only used when no better armor can be afforded.
You must have proficiency with light armor to wear partial armor proficiently. If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.
