     A hammer or mallet is a simple melee weapon. One consists of a weighted cylinder—typically shaped from stone or iron—affixed to the end of a long wooden shaft. A hammer is usually constructed to be used as a tool, meant for purposes such as driving a meal, shaping metal, or tenderizing meat, but its shape happens to make for an effective weapon.
     A warhammer is a more imposing design specifically built to be a formidable melee weapon, and a maul is a warhammer designed to be wielded in two hands.
